Melvin Crispell III hails from a rich musical legacy. His father, world-renowned musician Melvin Crispell, Jr. composed and played on award-winning songs for some of gospel music’s biggest artists. The Evolution series kicked off the fall season with national recording artist Anthony Hamilton. It was so much fun and a truly authentic conversation with Anthony Hamilton. Yolanda and Anthony talked about his personal story, his journey, the importance of voting (with some hilarious, killer, and unforgettable poll moves), his book, cooking, guilty pleasures and more. And yes, he sang as well!
Joe Biden announced Senator Kamala Harris as his choice for Vice-President. In a historical move, Harris becomes the first African American woman to be on the ticket. We talked about their past records, their current vision, the stakes in this election, what we must do to combat voter suppression, and what this ticket means for the Movement to address social justice issues. Our guests Annetta Watkins-Foard, Ray McKinnon and Sean Grier shared a wealth of information as we got ready for November elections and how we can all do our part to educate our friends and family and mobilize the vote in the age of a pandemic.
So Now What? This episode put the pieces together from the Indictment Series as Yolanda's guests discussed all aspects of criminal justice reform and police reform on the local, state and national level, and about initiatives that are taking place now. Most importantly, we discussed what YOU can do to affect change in your own communities.
Yolanda's guests North Carolina State Senator Mujtaba Mohammed and Charlotte City Councilman James "Smuggie" Mitchell talked about what we can do now to help affect change in the justice system on a policy level both on the state and local level. We also talked about the inner workings and structure of the General Assembly and Charlotte City Council and key legislation that directly impacts the criminal justice system. Finally, we talked about the tangible ways you can begin to use your voice to push for effective change with your own representatives and answered a number of questions from the audience.
Our special guest in this episode was North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley. Yolanda and Chief Justice Beasley talked openly about the justice system and Judicial system from her unique perspective. They discussed her journey to becoming North Carolina's first African American female Supreme Court Chief Justice and the reforms that are already taking place in the North Carolina justice system because of her courageous leadership.
In this episode Annalee Hardin and Arkevious Armstrong talked openly with Yolanda about their personal journey and their experiences of being formally incarcerated. They talked about the challenges they faced and their incredible stories of redemption. They also talked about reforms that are needed within the system as it relates to detention and incarceration.
The special guest for this episode was Mecklenburg County North Carolina Sheriff Garry McFadden @sugarfreetalk.
Yolanda and Sheriff McFadden talked about the criminal justice system from his unique perspective. First, in his career as a retired veteran homicide Detective to becoming Mecklenburg County’s first African American elected Sheriff. It was an in depth conversation about criminal justice reform from the perspective of detention, incarceration and more, and what needs to change now.
Our guests, retired CMPD Assistant Chief Vicki Foster and retired CMPD Detective Keith Way discussed their personal journeys as law enforcement officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Yolanda and her guests also took audience questions and discussed current issues surrounding high profile cases. There was an in-depth discussion on police reform in general and the defund the police movement in particular.
The Indictment is a series where Yolanda and her guests take an in-depth look at the criminal justice system from multiple perspectives. You are a member of the “Grand Jury”. This interactive series encouraged audience participation. The first segment featured Attorneys Robert Kelly Corbett and C. Renee Little and they discussed current issues surrounding high profile cases and had an in-depth discussion on what implicit bias is and how to develop your own awareness of it. Yolanda had a fun and lively conversation with Joey Davis, aka DJ 06, who has been rocking dance floors for more than 20 years. They talked about his story and how the art of DJing has evolved, especially in the age of social media. They also talked about how "grown folks" music has evolved over the years. This episode was a party!
This episode addressed the impact that COVID-19 had throughout Mecklenburg County in what was then the early stages of the pandemic. Mecklenburg County leads the state in confirmed cases and deaths and is the largest city in the state. Our guest, Anthony Trotman is the Assistant County Manager, Consolidated Human Services Director for Mecklenburg County Government. We tackled the tough issues facing our county and citizens and we welcomed questions and comments from the audience and provided a wealth of important information and resources.

We started the season off with a bang! Literally! Our guest was the first African-American male certified sex therapist in the country, Mr. Todd Malloy. In this episode, we talked about his fascinating story from becoming an engineer to a pastor and ultimately a sex therapist. We also discuss what some of the barriers are to healthy sexual relationships, the most common complaint that men have about sex, and the most common complaint that women have about sex. But you’ve got to tune in to the entire episode to catch the role-play portion and some of the techniques Todd uses in his practice.
